Transmog is optional and can be turned off entirely. It keeps armor-type restrictions.

Classic Mode turns transmog off by default Uncommon and Rare dungeon drops grant their appearance to every eligible looter. Epic raid appearances go only to the player who binds the item Poor and Common items grant their appearance immediately Armor type restrictions stay in place (plate to plate, cloth to cloth) Level restrictions on appearances lift at 60; low-level characters cannot use high-level appearances before then Helms and cloaks can be hidden without enabling transmog Clay Stone, as paraphrased by Wowhead: the team wants to give players the agency to choose wow.gg: a client-side toggle can hide other players' transmog so you see their actual gear
